As a wedding photographer in Dayton Ohio, I’ve always wanted to do snowy engagement photos for a couple. When trying to think through the timing for Sarah and Chandler’s engagement session, we knew we had to schedule it for winter, so that they had plenty of time to get their Save-the-Dates out for their fall wedding! But I had no idea what beauty would be in store for us! Just a few days before, a gigantic winter storm came for the Cincinnati-Dayton area. It left inches of snow, ice, and very cold temps! But my-oh-my it made for a PERFECT snowy engagement photos.
I told Sarah I was ecstatic – I hadn’t had the opportunity to photograph a snow session in the four years of doing professional photography. Don’t get me wrong – I’m always super pumped for engagement sessions, but when you get to try something out for the first time as a photographer, it adds a little bit of thrill!
I sent Sarah a list of locations to consider, and she went for Clifton Gorge! This area of Yellow Springs, Ohio is so beautiful! I had only been to Clifton Gorge (which borders John Bryant State Park) in the spring and summer and hadn’t seen it in the winter. It’s just as lovely! (But seriously, if you haven’t been to either park, add this to your list of hiking locations! You won’t be sorry you did!)
On Google Maps, you can see that there are two entrances to Clifton Gorge – we met at the parking lot 169 Jackson St. Yellow Springs, OH. Right at the parking lot is the trail head to a GORGEOUS area.
Alright, so enough about this gorgeous location. Let’s talk about these two! So, this was their first encounter meeting me in person, and what did Chandler get to do? Ha, help dig my Jeep out of the snow! That’s right, even before our session had started, I somehow managed to get my car stuck in the snow. He was so helpful and kind – so just had to add that in there!
We began our session, and man was it cold. But these two were such troopers. I always ask my couples to describe kind of their “natural state,” and before I could explain further, they both blurted out that they’re usually laughing. I love that – couples who are just happy and joyful bring life to a photo session! Both are so sweet, and I can see why they gravitated toward one another.
We were outside in the snow, when it was roughly 20 degrees for over an hour. They also did an outfit change and I love the colors they chose – it looked great against the snowy backdrop. They such a great job with one another – but my favorite part was how they were down for anything including a snowball fight! Yes! We had a blast just being goofy in the snow and I even convinced them to kiss for the camera a couple of times. 🙂
Enjoy the photos below! There’s definitely proof that winter engagement photos really do look amazing!
